Harness the power of your creativity

Harness the power of your creativity

By Jean Ricot Dormeus

In November 2013, the UN General Assembly adopted Resolution A/Res/71/284 designating 21 April of every year as World Creativity and Innovation Day. This Resolution acknowledges that innovation is essential for harnessing the economic potential of each nation, for supporting mass entrepreneurship, creativity and innovation, for creating new momentum for economic growth and job creation and for expanding opportunities for all, including women and youth.

Further, the special edition of the Creative Economy Report stated that human creativity and innovation, at both the individual and group levels, have become the true wealth of nations in the twenty-first century.

Mankind survival and progress depends on the judicious adaptation and novel solutions to personal and collective issues. Therefore, we must keep our minds sharpened, engaged, and scanning the horizon for new opportunities, impending challenges and threats, and tailored skills and technologies. As a consequence, our businesses will thrive and our communities will blossom.

Given the critical importance of creativity, it is not surprising that about 60% of CEOs polled cited creativity as the most important leadership quality, compared with 52% for integrity and 35% for global thinking.

I particularly like the definition Albert Einstein gave of creativity, “Creativity is intelligence having fun.” And Edward de Bono added to the fun saying,

“There is no doubt that creativity is the most important human resource of all. Without creativity, there would be no progress, and we would be forever repeating the same patterns.”

Getting creative and harnessing the power of your creativity requires that you capture your new ideas, broaden your knowledge, seek out challenging tasks and surround yourselves with inspiring things and people. You step up to that plane when you nurture faith and hope, when you are not afraid to fail, and when you make lifelong learning our best friend.

“To concede defeat when you are entrusted with a mission amounts to jeopardizing the utility and quality of the rest of your life. Is it worth it?”
