Develop your vision

I studied basic astronomy as a requirement to complete my training at my church youth society. For a practical session, we went to a rural camping area with no artificial light on a beautiful summer night. We held flashlights and positioned ourselves on a flat concrete roof. The sky glittered with constellations and stars of different magnitude. I could admire that glorious tapestry, but couldn’t make sense of it all. Then our teacher showed us the most common constellations, including Orion and Ursa Minor with the Pole Star. Only then, my sight became vision. Among other things, I could use the elements I saw to identify the North.
I came to understand why sometimes we can’t pinpoint opportunities around us. Solutions to vexing issues may be in front of us, yet we go far off to look for them. No wonder our mind’s sight and imagination opens the door to our future reality. Therefore, we should focus on the future, not the past or the challenges of the present, lest we reproduce what we do not want. Any effective transformation process starts with a clear vision of the future in mind.
Forbes Magazine ran an article about the importance of a vision statement in the business world. It says, “A vision statement… can establish a benchmark, provide line of sight, direction, and where the organization wants to be in a set period of years. The purpose of setting a vision is twofold: it is there to create a long-term strategy for where the company is going; secondly, it is meant to align everyone around the company’s direction.”
This statement also applies to our personal life. It takes a clear vision, not just sight, to produce impressive results. Hellen Keller gave us a profound thought to ponder, “The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision.” Isn’t it time to develop our vision? Let’s stop looking at the Pole Star without seeing the North or missing out on fascinating opportunities.
